Automobile transport

Automobile transport is the primary means of transportation connecting settlements of the region.
Now transportation of passengers by automobile transport is carried out on 328 on regular lines, including: 145 - intracity; 51 intradistrict; 80 - intraregional intercity and suburban; 20 - interregional, providing the link  with the cities of Astana, Almaty, Pavlodar, Karaganda, Taldykorgan, Kokshetau; 18 - international lines, providing the link  of settlements of the region with the cities of Russia - Barnaul, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tomsk, Rubtsovsk, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Novokuznetsk, Zmeinogorsk; the People's Republic of China - Urumchi, Altai.

According to results of 2017, the share of settlements uncovered with the passenger automobile transportation having more than 100 people amounted to 30 %, 432 (70 %) of 616 settlements of the region (to be provided with bus service) are provided with regular transportation, 184 ones (30 %) are not provided.

Basically, the settlements of Abai, Ayagoz, Kurchum and Zharma districts are less provided with regular lines. At the same time, Shemonaikha and Borodulikha districts have the most favorable situation with regular lines.

In order to provide settlements with passenger transport and access to  transport services, 9 districts of the region allocate grants for intradistrict and intercity bus services. (Ayagoz, Gluboky, Zharma, Zaisan, Katon-Karagai, Kokpekty, Kurchum, Tarbagatai and Urjar districts).

Railway transportation

The operational length of the railway lines on East Kazakhstan region is 1247,6 km, the total length of running lines is 1259,7 km.

The basic branch lines running outside the region are Zashita-Lokot", Semipalatinsk-Lokot, Semipalatinsk-Almaty.

In the region there are two railway sections, they are affiliated branches of National Company Kazakhstan Temit Zholy JSC - Semipalatinsk railway section in Semey city and East Kazakhstan railway section (Zashita), in Ust-Kamenogorsk city.

Transportation of passengers and luggage is carried out by railway transportation in the following directions: Oskemen - Almaty, TRidder - Astana (with one trailing car to up to Moscow), Tomsk - Ridder, Semey - Kyzylorda, and transit: Novokuznetsk - Semey - Bishkek, Novosibirsk - Semey - Almaty, Novosibirsk - Semey - Tashkent, Pavlodar - Semey - Almaty, Pavlodar - Semey - Karaganda, and interdistrict rail service Zashita -Ziryan and Zashita –Leninogorsk.

Interdistrict rail service Zashita-Ziryan - 3 times a week and Zashita –Leninogorsk - 4 times a week, operated by Solux Express Ltd.

Air transport                                                                                             

The region has 4 airports, including: 2 airports are admitted to serve the international flights (Ust-Kamenogorsk, Semey), the airport of Ust-Kamenogorsk city is categorized on the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (further - ICAO) on the 1st category; 2 airports serve local airlines (Zaisan, Urjar).

The airport of Semey city (Semey International Airport Ltd)

Lines served: Almaty (daily), Astana (daily), Ust-Kamenogorsk, Urjar (2 flights a week).

Since 2016, a runway, turn-off strips and air terminal of the airport are under reconstruction within the framework of the state program Nurly Zhol. They are expected to complete in 2018.

Ust-Kamenogorsk Airport

Arrival terminal for 200 passengers per hour was put into service in 2017.

Reconstruction of the airport complex is under consideration.

Lines served: Almaty (daily), Astana (daily), Karaganda (2 flights a week), Moscow (4 flights a week), Novosibirsk (4 flights a week), Semey, Urjar (2 flights a week), Zaisan (2 flights a week)

Zaisan Airport

Lines served: Ust-Kamenogorsk (2 flights a week).

Urjar Airport

Lines served: Ust-Kamenogorsk, Semey (2 flights a week, all-the-year-round), Almaty (3 flights a week, seasonal), Astana (3 flights a week, seasonal).

Water transport

The Irtysh River is the main navigable artery of internal waterways of the Republic of Kazakhstan that flows on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan from the border on the People's Republic of China up to the border on the Russian Federation. The river is 1 698 km in length on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, including 1 100 km on the territory of East Kazakhstan region.

For today, the region has three shipping locks:

- Shulba single-lift shipping lock, located in Shulbinsk settlement.

- Ust-Kamenogorsk single-lift shipping lock, located 12 km above Ust-Kamenogorsk.
- Bukhtarma four-lift shipping lock, located near Serebryansk town.

Republican Public Enterprise of Waterways maintains waterways.

Bukhtarma Reservoir has two ferries:

1) Kurchum ferry Kyzyl Tu, near Kaznakovka settlement and Kurchum settlement. Transportation is carried out by diesel-electric ships Kurchum and Irtysh.

2) Vasilyevskaya ferry, near Bolshenarym settlement – maintained by individual entrepreneur Kudaskina A.Z.
