General information of the museum

EAST KAZAKHSTAN REGIONAL NEVZOROVS’ MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS IN SEMEY CITYEast Kazakhstan Regional Nevzorovs’ Museum of Fine Arts in Semey city was founded in 1985 and it is one of the largest in Kazakhstan with the collection of art values. The collection of the museum is rather small, but its structure and art advantages are of interest, both of art fans and experts. Ways of development of Russian art of the end of XVIII - the beginning of XX century are fully enough expressed in expositions; the section of the fine arts of Kazakhstan includes the brightest and original names of domestic art culture. A small section of the West-European painting and drawing of the end of XVI - the beginning of XX century being a country town is of significant interest. The museum exposition ends with art of the CIS countries of the twentieth century - Russia, Central Asia, Georgia, Armenia, Belarus and others.

The museum’s main feature is the collection of pre-revolutionary Russian art. The great masters are represented in this expositions, defined the development of Russian art culture. All these were organized owing to the gift of Nevzorovs in 1988. Yuliy Vladimirovich Nevzorov, his wife, Antonina Mikhailovna and their daughter, Julia Yuliyevna presented more than 500 works of Russian, Soviet and foreign art to the Semey Museum.
The Nevzorovs’ collection has an old and interesting history and dates back to
the middle of XIX century. Yuliy Vladimirovich Nevzorov inherited the collection gathered by his father and grandfather and essentially enriched and increased it.

In 1991 the museum was named after Nevzorovs, and in 1995 for the big contribution to development of culture of Kazakhstan Y.V. Nevzorov was awarded the Government award “Parasat”.

From the very beginning the museum increases its funds. As a result of this activity the significant amount of works of Russian, foreign and modern art from private collections of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Almaty were brought in museum collection.

It should be noted that the collection of the fine arts of Kazakhstan takes the special place in the museum. The museum’s collection numbers more than 1000 exhibits of our Republic. In total there are more than 3600 works of art in funds of the museum.

"Album-guidebook" containing the exposition of the museum is published.

Educational activity of the museum covers not only the East Kazakhstan region. Exhibitions from the museum’s collection were seen in a capital of our Republic Astana, and in the largest cities such as Almaty, Pavlodar, Ust-Kamenogorsk. In the museum there are lecture halls, children's art studio, concert halls.

The museum has a restoration workshop where products of painting are preserved and restored.

The museum is located in a complex of buildings constructed by Semipalatinsk merchant of the First guild Fyeodor Stepanov in 70th years of XIX century. The construction was finished in 10th years of XX century. Interiors of an ancient building give the best fit the museum creating the atmosphere of silences and calm.

Having got the basic part of collection in the first years of existence, the museum began its active research work. Full inventory of collection was carried out, large research work on establishment of authorship, specification of datings, names of products, finding-out of legends, decodings of plots etc. is conducted.

The Nevzorovs’ collection was studied by such large critics, as T.A. Perov, N.A. Kozhin, M.I. Gorelov, P.E. Kornilov, T.V. Alekseyeva. With the collection worked A.L. Kaganovich, A.M. Amshinskaya, А.А Fyeodorov-Davydov and others.

At the same time, huge work on attribution of works of art is still necessary. Workers of the museum will be deeply grateful to everyone who will give remarks or will reveal the truth of origins of these works.
